Dr. John Sheldon

My family moved to Key West from Michigan when I was 5 years old. On the way home from picking up my first pair of glasses, I asked my mom what was wrong with the brake lights of the car in front of us. She said "nothing is wrong with them" and then asked why. I said "they look like distinct, round circles of red light instead of fuzzy red oval blobs. They have never looked like that before." Then I noticed I could read the license plate, again for the first time. I was finishing the 7th grade. This experience had a profound effect on me. And it inspired me to pursue my optometric career, so that I could help people see their best for the first time and throughout their lives.

After graduating from Key West High School in 1991, I attended Florida State University for 3 years where I studied Biology. In 1994 I entered Nova Southeastern College of Optometry. At the completion of my 2nd year in 1996, I was awarded my Bachelor of Science in Vision Science. Upon graduation in 1998, I received my Doctorate of Optometry.

Following graduation, I travelled out to Shiprock New Mexico and the Navajo reservation. It was there that I completed a 1-year hospital-based optometric residency through the Southern California College of Optometry.

After my residency, I worked in the eye clinic of the West Palm Beach VA medical center for a year and then I was given the opportunity to join a private optometry practice in Key West. I remained with that practice for 5 years before purchasing my current practice in Marathon where I have been since 2005.

When not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife Carolyn and I have 3 beautiful kids Emily, Jacob and Sarah. We try to enjoy the water as much as possible with swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding being some of our favorite activities. The kids also keep us busy attending different sporting events on the weekends with soccer and hockey being the most popular.
